Прочитал несколько книг, почти все удачный выбор.
1. David J. Linden. The Accidental Mind: How Brain Evolution Has Given Us Love, Memory, Dreams, and God. Narrated by Ray Porter.
Замечательный обзор современного состояния нейронаук для чайников (как я). Написано с юмором и знанием предмета (насколько может судить физиолог, хотя и не нейройнный). Книга снимает туман со многих заблуждений о том, как работает наш мозг, откуда взялись мечты, сны, память, любовь, моногамия и религия. Всему есть своё объяснение, не требующее принятия на веру.
2. Christopher Hitchens. Hitch-22: A Memoir. Narrated by Christopher Hitchens.
Эта книга - исключение. Я бы её не читал. Это уже вторая книга этого автора, которую я прочитал и уже второй раз я заключил, что читать его не стоит. Думаю, что двух книг достаточно чтобы поставить крест на нём. Поверхностный, самовлюблённый троцкист (бывает же такое в XXI веке!), который всю жизнь жил за счёт стимулянтов политического характера, стремясь быть как можно ближе к самым отвратительным фигурам XX века.
3. Bob Lutz. Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business. Narrated by Norman Dietz.
Despite terrible narration, which sounds like grumpy old man with extreme right wing agenda, I was able to enjoy this book. Despite the extremely opinionated, sometimes utterly retrograde even anti-technology points of view, this is an honest book from a real car guy, who is looking at the core of the problem with today's world business, well beyond problems with the American business. Bean counters (=equity managers) is a problem in every old economy. Instead of creating new wealth these economies succumbed to managing old glory, by attempting to maintain safety network of paris-hiltons of America instead of investing in sergey-brins of America. But new brave world does not care about that anymore. Power of knowledge will once again allow new car guys to break through the net equity managers working on to protect talentless descendents of car guys of the last century, which kills car guys of the next century.
For many year I honestly tried to give different automakers a chance - and tried them all, every 3-4 years again and again. Despite the efforts to be fair, I have never ended up buying a GM or Ford. I have always owned Japanese cars, not because of left-wing propaganda inspired bias towards American cars, as the author suggested, but because a Japanese car looked better, handled better, was safer, cozier and had much better safety record. But after reading this book, I am prepared to give another chance to GM, after my Acura TL or Infinity G37 will be no longer fun to drive. I Bob Lutz at GM will take roots and continue to grow.
4. Janet Reitman. Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secretive Religion. Narrated by Stephen Hoye.
Fascinating account of how freedom of religion can become prison for thousands of people, caught in network of lies, economic inevitability, slavery and family pressure.

On (3), I owned several Fords and a Buick; never had a GM, but I rent them at least a dozen times a year as it seems Avis has some sort of a contract with GM. The point that I wanted to make was that after we got a Honda for my wife, I will never care of buying another American made car. It's even not that the quality is better (though it is), but the car feels better engineered. Consider this as another piece of left-wing propaganda :-)
